Former D.C. cop admits to running gambling operation

A former D.C. police officer has admitted to running an illicit gambling operation out of his St. Mary’s County home.

Darrell Alphonso Carter pleaded guilty this week in federal court in Greenbelt to one count of conducting an illegal gambling business, court records show. Plea documents say he hosted dice games, charged people to participate and made more than $2,000 on days he ran the games.

Carter ran the games fom January 2008 to September 2009, according to court records.

He and 11 others in the gambling and drug ring were charged in September 2009. A search of Carter’s home uncovered dice, a ledger with gambling information and six firearms. Court documents say Carter and his associated kept the guns to protect their gambling operation.

Carter was also initially indicted on drug charges, but those counts are slated to be dismissed at sentencing, said Marcia Murphy, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Maryland.

“There are no current allegations that he was involved in drug activity,” said Harry Trainor, Carter’s attorney.
