Calif. school to be named after Michelle Obama

Some students in Los Angeles now get the honor of going to a school named after Michelle Obama.

The Los Angeles Unified School District board voted unanimously on Tuesday to approve renaming Valley Region Elementary School No. 13 after the first lady, according to the Los Angeles Daily News.

Representatives at the school supposedly chose the name of the FLOTUS’s support for eating healthy and being active through her “Let’s Move” initiative, which works to fight childhood obesity in the U.S.

“This name was selected by the school-site council because Michelle Obama supports active living and eating healthy, and the school models itself on that,” LAUSD board member Nury Martinez told the Daily News.

Another LAUSD board member, Richard Vladovic, suggested that the school also have a garden to show its support of the program.

The Michelle Obama School will join two other schools in the City of Angels that have been named after her husband: The Barack Obama Charter School and the Barack Obama Global Preparation Academy.

Although the vote was unanimous, it did spark some controversy as schools in the district aren’t supposed to be named after living people. While the rule has been broken in the past, one board member, Tamar Galatzan, has decided to look into changing the policy for the future as a result of this vote.

“We do have rules about naming schools,” Galatzan said. “Over the summer I will be looking at that policy.”
