A Maryland grand jury has indicted a prominent historian and his assistant for conspiring to steal historical documents and selling them for profit.

Barry H. Landau, 63, and Jason James Savedoff, 24, are expected to have their first appearance in U.S. District Court in Baltimore on Friday.

Authorities said the duo stole original documents of Benjamin Franklin, Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The scheme was exposed after an employee of the Maryland Historical Society saw Savedoff remove a document from the library, authorities said. Investigators later found 60 documents, many of which were signed out by Landau, in Savedoff’s locker at the library.

The FBI has begun a nationwide investigation. Anyone who has information about the acquisition or sale of historical documents can call the FBI at 410-265-8080.
