Actress Bette Midler apologized on Monday for sharing a fake quote attributed to President Trump.
Midler posted a quote allegedly said by Trump in a 1998 article for People magazine. Snopes debunked the quote in 2015 after searching People magazine’s database of old articles.
The fake quote shows Trump calling Republicans “the dumbest group of voters in the country” and sources it back to People Magazine in 1998. Trump did many interviews with the magazine in the ’90s, but Snopes could not track down the alleged quote.
“He certainly knew his crowd,” Midler posted Sunday evening with a picture of the fake quote, blasting the message out to her 1.57 million followers.

Midler apologized early Monday afternoon and justified her confusion, saying, “Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true!”
I apologize; this quote turns out to be a fake from way back in ‘15-16. Don’t know how I missed it, but it sounds SO much like him that I believed it was true! Fact Check: Did Trump say in ’98 Republicans are dumb? https://t.co/NY9s6V49el via @rgj
