Elizabeth Warren’s presidential campaign had more than 300 salaried staffers in the second quarter of the year, making her campaign the largest of the 2020 pack.

Warren, who had 303 staffers on payroll, was closely followed by Bernie Sanders, whose campaign had 282 salaried staffers, according to an analysis by Politico.

Joe Biden, the front-runner, came in third with 193 salaried staffers.

Only four other campaigns have more than 100 on staff: Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Pete Buttigieg, and Beto O’Rourke.

The 2020 campaigns are far from the size of former President Barack Obama’s 2008 operation, which employed 432 staffers at this point in the primary. Hillary Clinton had 339 staffers.

Warren’s strategy appears to be paying off. She pulled in more than $19 million in the second quarter, despite eschewing high-dollar fundraisers. Her campaign spent nearly $4.2 million in salary, payroll taxes, and insurance during that time period.

Some of the campaigns’ sizes are proving to be risky for the lack of donations they are bringing in.

More than half of Booker’s $5.3 million in expenses for the second quarter were spent on personnel. His campaign also spent $740,000 more than he raised during that period.

The cost of staffing put Senators Kirsten Gillibrand and Amy Klobuchar in the red from April to June.
