Redskins executive vice president Vinny Cerrato resigned this morning, a stunning development and yet another twist in an odd season. In a statement, Cerrato said he and owner Dan Snyder had many discussions in the past few weeks regarding the Redskins’ future.

According to multiple sources, some of the big-named coaching candidates did not want to come to Washington if Cerrato were still in charge. Even Mike Shanahan, a source said, would want Cerrato in a different position. Bill Cowher made it clear to Snyder, one source said, that he would not come if Cerrato were involved.
One rumor making the rounds is that Shanahan told Snyder he would not come if Cerrato were involved, a league source said. A Redskins source said Cerrato was offered a lesser position and declined.
Whether or not that played a role in this morning’s events is uncertain. But, in the statement, Cerrato said, “We agreed that the franchise needs someone different in this position. I’m thankful to Dan Snyder and other members of his ownership team for the opportunities I’ve been given over the years.
“Of course, I am disappointed with this year’s results, but I strongly believe that with outstanding draft picks and encouraging performance by our younger players, we have laid a strong foundation for the franchise.”
Snyder said, “He is my friend, and he has always been there for me and the Redskins. He’s the consummate optimist and has always made decisions based on what would be the best for the team.”
A news conference is expected later today. I was also told that another major announcement (Cerrato’s successor perhaps) could come at that time. A league source said Cerrato had seemed upbeat in recent weeks, never giving a hint that he would possibly resign.
The league source said, “It had to be an overnight thing. Maybe he made a pact with somebody and he just wanted to get the process in motion I guess. That would be my take.”
