The Hillary Clinton campaign is vetting retired four-star Navy Adm. James Stavridis as a potential running mate, in the hope of adding military experience to the Democratic ticket, according to a report.
While in the Navy, Stravridis rose to become the supreme allied commander at NATO, and is now the dean of the Fletcher School at Tufts University in Boston. Clinton is interested in Stavridis for his foreign policy and national security experience.
Donald Trump has also spoken about selecting a running mate with military experience, citing retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn. But, Flynn is a lifelong Democrat, and many of his views, especially those on abortion, are out of step with the Republican base.
The Clinton campaign is also vetting Democratic Sens. Tim Kaine of Virginia, Sherrod Brown of Ohio and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts as well as Housing and Urban Development Secretary Julian Castro. The campaign likely won’t announce its running mate choice until after the Republican National Convention in Cleveland.
