ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The owner of the upstate New York animal hospice once praised by Oprah and other celebrities says she’s shutting down as the state attorney general announces a lawsuit accusing her of misusing funds.

New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says Wednesday that his office has sued Angel’s Gate and its CEO, Susan Marino, for persistently failing to file the financial reports required of charitable organizations.

Marino, who ran a hospice for hundreds of chronically ill and crippled dogs and cats, also faces cruelty charges stemming from an undercover investigation by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. She tells The Associated Press she’s finding new homes for 180 cats and “a handful” of dogs remaining at the facility in Delhi, 60 miles southwest of Albany.
