Bernie Sanders may not have clinched the Democratic nomination, but he continues to use his influence to encourage a grassroots movement, powered by the enthusiasm of his supporters. His website now displays the mantra, “This is your movement” and shows a mosaic of diverse supporters’ faces as the background.
Sanders and his supporters want a progressive economic agenda that would shrink the gap between the poor and rich, and combat the decline of the middle class. This agenda would ideally create jobs, raise wages, protect the environment, and provide health care for all, according to his website.
If he continues to harness the energy from his young supporters, Sanders could remain a prominent advocate for change and revolution.
“I have no doubt that a strong well-organized grassroots movement can take on the establishment and defeat the establishment, and that is precisely what we’ve got to do and what the political revolution is all about,” he said on Thursday in a ‘Where We Go From Here’ speech.
He continued to reiterate the main points from his campaign, such as financial reform, a raise in the minimum wage, cracking down on Wall Street, and free tuition. He declared that the political revolution was just beginning as he shared his “vision for transforming this country.”
“Never, ever lose your sense of outrage,” he told the crowd. “You can beat the establishment. They’re not quite as powerful as some make them out to be.”
Sanders did not endorse Hillary Clinton on Thursday night, much to the chagrin of Clinton supporters who believe that his endorsement could unify the Democratic Party. Sanders also has yet to formally concede the nomination, though he told MSNBC that he would vote for Clinton, if only to stop Trump from winning the election and becoming president.
