Journalist jests

Maybe Brian Williams’ recent appearance on “Saturday Night Live” has had an effect on talking heads everywhere. …

George Stephanopoulos
. Bob Woodruff. Tom Brokaw. Bob Schieffer. These network news types are smart. And serious. And smooth. But funny?

Who woulda thunk?

But check out these zingers from Tuesday night’s International Center for Journalists awards dinner, held at the Reagan Building.

» Stephanopoulos: After hearing Russian business journalist Anton Kazarin say, “Sometimes when I watch TV in my country, I feel like I’m throwing up,” George countered with, “It’s OK, sometimes when we watch TV, we feel like we’re throwing up, too.”

» Schieffer: When he took to the podium to introduce Brokaw, Schieffer said, “We could say a lot of good things about him, but this seems like neither the place nor the time for that.”

» Brokaw: Upon taking the mic, he promised to keep his remarks short because “dragging an old guy up here and hearing what he has to say is the Washington equivalent of waterboarding.”

» Woodruff: Discussing the brain injury he suffered in 2006, he said, “One thing about my brain injury is that I can’t remember complex words and names. … So it’s a lot easier to follow Bob and Tom.” He later took questions from the audience, and one man asked whether Woodruff had lost any of his Chinese after the injury. He responded in what one would assume to be Chinese, then added in English, “I lost a lot of it, but I think I just said something about George being a big jerk.”
