A good idea, an outrage and a quote

Bright Bulb: Managing motorcycle mayhem.

Maryland State Police are responding to an increase in motorcycle accidents involving alcohol by revving up their motorcycle initiatives. It’s not only motorcyclists who cause trouble with their bikes, either. Frequently, car drivers cause accidents because they’re not looking for motorcycles — it just doesn’t occur to them. And of course, drinking and driving helps no one. If we all work together to be more aware, Maryland’s rate of alcohol-related motorcycle deaths will go down next year. It’s that simple.

Outrage: Dubious debt

Who: Gov. Martin O’Malley

What: O’Malley is ignoring warnings from both the state’s comptroller and treasurer and increasing the state debt affordability limit.

Why it’s a bad idea: Maryland has had serious debt problems the past two years, and now it looks as if O’Malley’s shooting for a third straight year of big-time deficits.

Why he is doing it: With an increased amount of debt the state can take on, O’Malley can spend $325 million on public school construction — a perennial family favorite that would make him look good in the 2010 gubernatorial election. None of us is going to be looking or feeling too good if this debt gets any bigger. If it goes another year, the state is going to have to build a giant public building (with our tax money, of course) just to contain it.

Today’s quote:

“There’s still kind of a steady increase in the incidence of rabies in cats. … It’s something that a lot of state and local health agencies continue to monitor.” – Kim Mitchell, an epidemiologist with the Maryland Center for Veterinary Public Health, on the number of rabid cats in Maryland.
