Amidst all the Democrats in Denver this week, Republicans have managed to place a significant number of infiltrators to press their own message — and with Obama giving a speech to 75,000 people in front of a faux-Greek temple, the GOP all week long have continued to try to turn Obama’s star power against him. E-mail blasts to the media from the Republican National Committee have repeatedly tweaked Obama under the title of “Audacity Watch.” And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has been particularly fond of this line of attack, in event after event calling Obama “a very charming and charismatic celebrity and senator” in a tone of voice that makes the words not sound like a compliment.
And: “When the issues are not with you, you go with celebrity and fanfare.” And he said Obama offers “bromides of such a generic nature that we don’t know where he will really lead.” And, finally, just in case we didn’t get the point, the more direct approach: “Barack Obama is a fine person but I don’t think he’s ready to be president.”
