Baltimore police union endorses Mitchell

Members of Baltimore?s police union Tuesday announced their endorsement for mayoral candidate Keiffer Mitchell.

The 11th District councilman is the “only candidate for mayor that will make the citizens of Baltimore safe again,” union President Paul Blair said.

“He is committed to family, safety and our schools and, further, he has shown a commitment to working in cooperation with and partnership with the rank and file of the Baltimore City Police Department,” Blair said in a statement.

The union?s 4,800 active and retired city police officers will campaign door-to-door, with sign-waving and phone calls to support Mitchell, who criticized current police leaders and Mayor Sheila Dixon, the election front-runner, for the city?s escalating murder rate.

“We?ve been told we cannot afford to do what is necessary to make our streets safe,” Mitchell said. “I say, we cannot afford not to.”
