WOONSOCKET, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island’s attorney general says it appears a for-profit Massachusetts hospital group has backed out of its plan to buy financially troubled Landmark Medical Center in Woonsocket.
Attorney General Peter Kilmartin said Wednesday that Steward Health Care System doesn’t appear to intend to move ahead with the deal, which was years in the making. He says his office, which regulates such deals, will move as quickly as possible if another buyer comes forward.
WPRI-TV first reported that the deal appeared dead. A spokesman for Landmark said the court-appointed lawyer overseeing Landmark, which has been in receivership since 2008, is talking to other potential buyers.
Woonsocket officials have said the hospital’s closure would be devastating to the community.
A Steward spokesman couldn’t immediately be reached.
