Pence blasts ‘remarkable’ outrage over Trump Jr. Skittles tweet

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence bashed the hostile reaction to a tweet from Donald Trump Jr. comparing Syrian refugees to a fruity candy.

In an interview with MSNBC Tuesday, Pence told Kelly O’Donnell that the amount of outrage is “remarkable,” going on to defend the comments from the eldest son of Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

“It’s remarkable to me to see the level of outrage about a metaphor used by [Donald Trump Jr.] when Hillary Clinton is calling for a 550 percent increase in the Syrian refugee program,” the Republican vice presidential nominee said.

“All the while, our FBI and public safety officials tell us that we can’t know for sure who those people are coming into this country,” Pence said. Pence’s defense came after Trump tweeted out a picture of a bowl of Skittles and compared them to a group of Syrian refugees entering the United States.

“If I had a bowl of skittles and I told you just three would kill you. Would you take a handful?” Donald Trump Jr. wrote. “That’s our Syrian refugee problem.”

Mars, Incorporated, the candy manufacturer that makes Skittles, tweeted out a response to the comment, saying simply that “Skittles are candy; refugees are people,” adding that it is an “inappropriate analogy.”
