The Washington Post: A case study in why Americans don’t trust the media

According to Gallup, more Americans distrust the “mass media” (which Gallup defines as “newspapers, TV, and radio”) than ever before. A full 60 percent of respondents told Gallup they have little or no trust in the fourth estate.

And that fall in trust comes mainly from Republicans and independents. “Republicans’ level of trust this year is similar to what they expressed in the fall of 2008, implying that they are especially critical of election coverage. Independents are sharply more negative compared with 2008, suggesting the group that is most closely divided between President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney is quite dissatisfied with its ability to get fair and accurate news coverage of this election,” Gallup reports.

The Washington Post is a prime example of why Republican and independent trust in media is at record lows. Just look at today’s fawning front page story by Lyndsey Layton who reports, “In 31 / 2 years in office, President Obama has set in motion a broad overhaul of public education from kindergarten through high school, largely bypassing Congress and inducing states to adopt landmark changes that none of his predecessors attempted.”

One might immediately ask, “Can a president legally ‘bypass Congress’ to rewrite our nation’s education laws?” The Brookings Institution, a pinnacle left of center Washington establishment, wrote of Obama’s education policies this year:

It is one thing for an administration to grant waivers to states to respond to unrealistic conditions on the ground or to allow experimentation and innovation. … The NCLB waiver authority does not grant the secretary of education the right to impose any conditions he considers appropriate on states seeking waivers, nor is there any history of such a wholesale executive branch rewrite of federal law through use of the waiver authority.

In other words, “no.” Obama’s entire education reform agenda is completely illegal. But none of this appears anywhere in Layton’s report. It’s a total pro-Obama hack whitewash.

The complete and utter failure of the liberal press to do anything but cheer lead for Obama is part of the reason The Washington Examiner spent four months investigating Obama this year.

You can read the full report here. Including how Obama helped to evict poor Chicago families from their homes in the dead of winter. A story that, somehow, The Washington Post chose to completely ignore.
