Former Secretary of State Colin Powell sure isn’t happy with his party these days.
Powell spoke out against Republicans during an appearance on MSNBC‘s “Morning Joe” on Monday, criticizing the party for its so-called tactics to suppress the vote.
“Should we really have gone after reducing the turnout of voters in those places where we thought it would make a difference?” he asked. “The Republican Party should be a party that says, ‘We want everybody to vote,’ and make it easier to vote and give them a reason to vote for the party and not find ways to keep them from voting at all.”
The former Secretary of State said his party has been moving farther to the right, a move he doesn’t consider inherently wrong, but a move that will jeopardize future elections for Republicans.
“The country is moving more toward the center,” he said. “There are social changes taking place in this country that are irreversible, and there is a demographic change. We’re going to be a minority-majority country in one generation. And you can’t just say, ‘Well, we’ll fix our message.’ It’s not the message. You have to appeal with policies and programs to these people who are going to be the leaders of our country ins a generation.”
Powell also recently condemned the Republican Party for looking down on minorities due to a “dark vein of intolerance.”
