‘Turn Texas Blue’: Celebrities boost campaign to raise funds for Lone Star State Democrats

Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Amy Schumer, and Pink are just a few of the celebrities hoping to help raise money for Democrats in Texas.

A group of celebrities started the “Turn Texas Blue” campaign on social media ahead of the first presidential debate on Tuesday night. The group is calling for individuals to donate $38 to Democratic causes in the Lone Star State in the hopes that Joe Biden can lock down the state’s 38 electoral votes.

“There’s no debate: If we #TurnTexasBlue, Trump is through. $38 for 38 electoral votes. Match me: 38for38.com,” said a message that has gone viral.

According to the Texas Democratic Party, the campaign has raised more than $225,000 in the last 24 hours. The Nov. 3 election is 35 days away.

Luke Warford, the director of voter expansion for the Texas Democratic Party, cited several recent polls that show Biden and President Trump in a statistical tie in the race to win the state. He told the Washington Examiner that he believes the campaign will help his party “turn a tie game into a historic defeat.”

“As polls consistently show, Texas is the biggest battleground state in the country. It’s neck and neck, and we’re seeing unprecedented energy and enthusiasm for turning Texas blue,” Warford said.

Allen West, the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, dismissed the campaign. He told the Washington Examiner that voters in Texas are not concerned by the desires of Hollywood insiders.

“Texas don’t care about the opinions of outside celebrities from Hollywood. If they haven’t noticed, there are many people that are departing California to come to Texas because of the policies we have for growth, opportunity, and promise,” West said.

He said that many companies have ditched California in favor of Texas, including Elon Musk’s company Tesla. West argued that voters in Texas value “liberty and freedom” and do not want to see the policies of California implemented in their state.

“We don’t need Julia Dreyfus or whatever her name is to start trying to raise money to turn Texas into another version of California where they are suggesting, or demanding, that people have electric vehicles by 2035, where they have rolling blackouts because they can’t manage their electrical grid,” West said.

“In Texas, we are on our own electrical grid, and we will keep it that way, and we will keep Texas red,” he added.

Last week, Republicans in Texas, under the leadership of Rep. Dan Crenshaw, raised at least $218,000 with an Avengers-style campaign advertisement.
