Missouri standoff: Suspect taken into custody after two officers shot and one killed


A suspect has been taken into custody by police in Missouri after an armed standoff Monday afternoon. The suspect was being sought in connection to the shooting of two officers on Sunday night, one fatally.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said on Monday afternoon that the suspect, 35-year-old Kenneth Lee Simpson, was “possibly in a home on MO 19 in Hermann.”

In a Monday tweet, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F added that “a perimeter was established around the residence. The Patrol is working to establish contact with the suspect and using additional tactical resources to resolve the situation.”

Later, it revealed that “the individual exited the home. He was taken into custody by the MSHP SWAT Team.”

The blue alert was subsequently called off.

Hours after sending out the alert on Sunday evening, the MSHP revealed that one of the shot officers had succumbed to his injuries.

The deceased officer was Hermann Police Department Detective Sgt. Mason Griffith.

Blue alerts are used in the state to quickly inform the public about “violent offenders who have killed, seriously injured, or pose an imminent and credible threat to law enforcement.”

The other officer is in “serious but stable condition,” per authorities.

According to MSHP Troop F, Simpson was armed with an “unknown type of firearm.”
