LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles city officials say 950 guns have been removed from the streets through a weekend gun buyback.
Mayor Eric Garcetti and police Chief Charlie Beck on Monday cited the recent deadly rampage near Santa Barbara as an example of why such events are important.
The city collected 476 handguns, 273 rifles, 170 shotguns and 31 assault weapons.
Participants received a supermarket gift card for up to $200, depending on the type of gun.
The program has collected more than 12,000 guns since its creation in 2009.
Last month in the Isla Vista community near the University of California, Santa Barbara, six students were slain and 13 other people were wounded in a young man’s rampage which involved shooting, stabbing and using a car as a weapon.
