Drivers here and nationwide paid the highest average gas prices ever this year.
The record-setting $3.52 per gallon national average was dwarfed by the District’s new record average, $3.68, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.

Nationwide, American households are on pace to spend $4,155 on gasoline during 2011, compared to $3,315 last year.
And holiday gas prices are high this year, too.
Washington area drivers, 2.3 million of whom will be traveling for the holidays, are paying an average $3.20 per gallon for gas, compared with $3.04 last year.
And AAA expects gas prices to climb in 2012 as well.
“Whenever we see prices this high this late in the year, it means trouble at the pump,” said AAA Mid-Atlantic’s John Townsend.
