LinkedIn tops Facebook with DC establishment

LinkedIn, the professional networking site, has surpassed social media giant Facebook as Washington’s preferred site for work talk and is fast becoming the top pick for news, according to a groundbreaking survey.

Every year, National Journal polls “Washington influentials” for a trends survey released in the fall, and publisher Poppy MacDonald hinted at some early results, including the emergence of LinkedIn as a heavyweight inside the Beltway.

“Fifty percent more policy professionals report using LinkedIn than Facebook for their work, and it’s not just for networking,” she said. “The platform is quickly becoming a go-to destination for news content, as well.”

Less surprising: The media and their sources in policy and government roles trust the media and their sources.

And news and links shared among friends are given higher credibility, she wrote in an email. “Trust in social media as a source of policy news has nearly tripled since last year, and currently the majority of respondents in D.C. report trusting a piece of content more when it’s shared with them by a friend or colleague.”
