Mike Shanahan would have preferred Rocky McIntosh attend this weekend’s voluntary minicamp. However, he understands what McIntosh is trying to do: get a better contract.
The Washington Post reported that McIntosh is upset with his contract status. McIntosh is a restricted free agent. In past years he would have been unrestricted, but because the collective bargaining agreement was not extended, he became a restricted free agent. He has two more seasons before he could become unrestricted.

“In the past they’d be getting that big contract,” Shanahan said. “I sympathize with what they’re going through. At the same time we’re dealing with the situation at hand and I’d like Rocky to come in as quick as possible and be with his teammates. I understand how agents do things differently. I have a lot of respect for Rocky and hopefully he’ll be in here quickly.”
McIntosh would play inside linebacker in the 3-4. Without him in camp, H.B. Blades worked alongside London Fletcher in the Redskins’ new base defense.
