[WATCH] Colbert uncovers the ‘truth’ behind the ’60 Minutes’ Benghazi mistake: Hillary Clinton got to them

Does it seem fishy that CBS‘ 60 Minutes news show aired an exclusive report on the Benghazi attack, then later issued an apology? It does to Stephen Colbert, and he set out to get to the bottom of it!

In the end of October, 60 Minutes interviewed a British security contractor who was apparently an eyewitness to the 9/11 attack in Libya, only to later find out he had lied. During Sunday night’s broadcast of the show, correspondent Lara Logan apologized for the mistake.

But Colbert still had questions, and on Monday night’s episode of The Colbert Report he reached a terrifying conclusion: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had gotten to them and stifled the truth!

To provide proof for his conclusion, Colbert interviewed an eyewitness to the Clinton intimidation, a ‘college intern’ named Poncho Denews.

“It was Hillary Clinton and her band of thugs!” the bearded Denews told the host. “She was swinging a bike chain and yelling, ‘We’re here to kill this story! Who wants to eat some chain?'”

But it turned out that Denews wasn’t a college intern at all, but Charlie Skinner from HBO‘s The Newsroom wearing a disguise.

Skinner then launched into an impressive — and incredibly funny — diatribe about the importance of quality journalism and separating truth from fiction.

“I recall a man who said, ‘With great power comes great responsibility,'” the newsman said. “That man was Spiderman’s uncle. And now — he’s dead!”

Realizing his mistake, Colbert issued an apology for being fooled by Poncho Denews.

“The most important thing to everyone here at The Colbert Report is the truth,” the host said, mocking the 60 Minutes apology.  “And the truth is, it’s somebody else’s fault.”
