LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman in her 90s and a man in his 70s died after fire burned a condominium building in Encino, fire officials said Friday.
Five other people, including a firefighter, were sent to the hospital with injuries suffered in Thursday night’s blaze at the three-story Encino Spa Condominiums building, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. One person, who did not want to go to the hospital, was treated at the scene.
About 100 firefighters managed to squelch the blaze in a little over an hour.
Firefighters found smoke alarms were not working, Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Jaime Moore said. Officials were distributing fire alarms to units Friday.
The two who died likely suffered from smoke inhalation, but an official cause of death will be determined by the coroner.
A firefighter was treated for a hand injury and listed in fair condition.
No names were immediately released and the conditions of the others were not immediately known.
The cause of the blaze is being investigated.
