Donald Trump is right about President Obama having “more fire in his belly” when attacking the Republican Party than defeating terrorists, according to Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah.
“When you want to see the president fired up, it’s when he’s talking about Republicans. It’s not when he’s going out and talking about defeating ISIS and protecting the United States of America,” Chaffetz said on Fox News, referring to Obama’s Tuesday speech in which he defended himself from Republican attacks that he is afraid to use the term “radical Islam.”
Chaffetz also dismissed Hillary Clinton’s decision to use the term “radical Islamism.”
“Well, this is the heart and root of why Hillary Clinton lacks credibility and I don’t believe she’ll become the next president of the United States. Because she is willing to say or do anything when it’s politically convenient,” said Chaffetz, who chairs the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.
“And I do think Mr. Trump made a very good point yesterday when you want to see the president fired up, it’s when he’s talking about Republicans,” he added. “It’s not when he’s going out and talking about defeating ISIS and protecting the United States of America. You don’t see that … fire in the belly. You see it when he wants to talk about Donald Trump.”
Speaking at a campaign event in Greensboro, N.C., Tuesday night, Trump said Obama “was more angry at me than he was at the shooter” who killed 49 people in Orlando.
“One of the folks on television said, ‘Boy, has Trump gotten under his skin,'” the presumed GOP nominee said. “That’s the kind of anger he should have for the shooter and these killers that shouldn’t be here.”
Sunday’s massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla., left 49 dead plus the shooter and 53 others injured. The motive of the shooter, Omar Mateen, is still under investigation, though there are reports he pledged his allegiance to the Islamic State terror group during the attack.
