Police: Teen with gun cache had list of teachers’ names

The Bethesda teenager who turned himself in to Montgomery County police Wednesday after the discovery of an arsenal of weapons in his home had compiled a list of addresses for faculty members at his former high school, county police said.

Meanwhile, 18-year-old Colin McKenzie-Gude’s father, Joseph Lane Gude, 62, has been charged with buying and then giving to his son the four assault rifles, two shotguns, one handgun and ammunition that was seized from the house on 6300 block of Rockhurst Road on Tuesday, police said.

Gude is also charged with perjury for allegedly not giving investigators information on how his son had come to possess the firearms, police said.

More than 50 pounds of chemicals and several gallons of liquids commonly used to manufacture homemade explosives were also recovered, but police did not say what those materials were.

Other components used to manufacture explosives were also found, officers said. The investigation began after the Gaithersburg Police Department received a tip from a citizen. McKenzie-Gude graduated from the private St. John’s College High School on Military Road in the District of Columbia this year, police said.

It still remains unclear why McKenzie-Gude had gathered the weapons, but a list of addresses belonging to teachers from his alma mater was found by police as they searched the home. Police have not said what, if anything, McKenzie-Gude planned to do with the weapons or possible bomb making operation.

It also still remains unclear why McKenzie-Gude’s father had purchased the weapons for his son and what knowledge he may have had of his son’s intentions.

McKenzie-Gude is charged with five counts of possession of a firearm or ammunition by a minor, possession of a destructive device, and possession of explosive material, police said. It is illegal for anyone under 21 to possess certain types of firearms in Maryland.
