President Trump has invited Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to visit him in Washington, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said Friday.
Trump had spoken with Abbas earlier in the day.
The president has already distanced his administration’s stance toward the Palestinian state from that of his predecessor by announcing in February that he would not support a two-state solution with Israel. Instead, Trump encouraged Israeli and Palestinian officials to pursue a peace agreement on their own terms.
The Obama administration consistently pressured Israeli leaders to accept a two-state solution, which would grant Palestinians a recognized state alongside Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was among the first foreign leaders Trump invited to the White House.
