Chris Matthews likens GOP concerns over IRS scandal to belief they will be taken to “concentration camps”

While the president tries to downplay the partisan nature of the Internal Revenue Service scandal that has engulfed Washington in recent days, his MSNBC buddy Chris Matthews is doing quite the opposite.

In fact, the “Hardball” host seems to think so little of the scandal – where the government agency admitted to and apologized for applying increased scrutiny to the tax filings of organizations that have words like “Tea Party” and “patriot” in their documents – that’s he’s begun likening the concerns of conservatives over the scandal to a belief that they will be taken to “concentration camps” by the federal government!

“Then there are those right wing people out there,” Matthews said on Monday’s show. “They love this story, this baby. They always expect the worse. They get up in morning figuring, well, they’re about to be picked up by FEMA workers and taken to concentration camps or the black helicopters of the new world order, they’re coming to take their guns.”

“Yes, this ‘expect the worst’ crowd just got an earful of what it goes to bed at night agitated about,” he continued. “I can only guess what they’re saying about the news that some in the IRS have decided to target right-wing groups. ‘Knew it all the time,’ they’re muttering. ‘This is the government.’ They’re telling everyone they can listen to. ‘And they ought to abolish the darned IRS to start with’.”

Matthews’ extravagant condemnation of conservatives’ concerns isn’t justified, however. After all, the IRS did target audits to conservative groups. Moreover, the Obama Administration has been under fire recently for a slew of scandals, including the Benghazi talking points coverup and the revelation that the Justice Department had tapped the phone lines of Associated Press reporters.
