Watson’s shot at Masters not so elementary

On the second playoff hole Sunday at the Masters, Bubba Watson had a choice from deep in the woods — punch out to safety in the fairway (an easy shot) or try to reach the green (a difficult one). Watson chose the latter. From 155 yards away, the left-hander needed to curve the ball approximately 40 yards.

Anyone who has played much golf has heard how to hook the ball intentionally. You close your stance, close the face so it points to the target and point your shoulders on the line you want the ball to start. You then rotate your hands to the right if you are a right-hander, left if you are a lefty. Swing naturally, making sure to keep your head down and body turning.

Using a wedge to hit a hook is exceedingly difficult unless you are a tour professional. To accentuate his hook, Watson made a corkscrew swing — a low takeaway and a low finish — sending the club around his body.

Memo to amateurs: Don’t try this stunt at home.
