Iowa Libertarian Senate candidate dies in plane crash

Libertarian U.S. Senate candidate Doug Butzier has died in a plane crash, KCRG-TV in Iowa reported Tuesday.

Butzier’s wife told KCRG that he was flying his plane around 11 p.m. Monday when it crashed near the Dubuque Regional Airport.

He was a candidate in the hard-fought race along with Republican Joni Ernst and Democrat Bruce Braley.

Per a Des Moines Register profile of his candidacy, Butzier is survived by his wife, Ann, as well as two adult children from a previous marriage and three teenage stepchildren. He was the medical staff president at Dubuque’s Mercy Medical Center.
