I know this is the news you’ve been waiting for, but Lot 8, at least most of it, is supposed to be ready for D.C. United’s home opener tomorrow against New England. Thanks to leftover moutains of hideously colored dirty snow, it did look like another planet as recently as a few weeks ago. I haven’t done a personal inspection this week, but know that there’s plenty of overflow to the north parking lots if necessary.
Meanwhile, if you’re itching to see players in United jerseys playing today, you can battle the Friday rush-hour traffic to get out to Bretton Woods Recreation Center (15700 River Road, Germantown) to see D.C.’s u-16 team take on West Ham United’s academy team in the championship of the Tiffany International Cup Tournament. With Bill Hamid and Andy Najar, we know how D.C. is doing producing young players of late — one guy to see this afternoon is their 6-2 centerback Jalen Robinson — still only 15 years old.
As for the first team match, the Revs most notably could be without Shalrie Joseph (hip flexor), who is listed as questionable and didn’t train yesterday.
Two other links for this morning: 1), the transcript of yesterday’s conference call with Major League Soccer executive vice president of player relations and competition Todd Durbin talking about the changed Designated Player rules (by the way, was I the only one who couldn’t shake the notion that yesterday’s announcement was an April Fools’ joke? — either i’m too gullible with that stuff, or it’s a bad day to make major rule changes); and 2) my D.C. United story for today’s print edition, which made a hopeful leap of connecting Carey Talley with a new D.C. United stadium. Likely story.
