Kellyanne Conway: Trump believes in ‘clean air, clean water’

Kellyanne Conway, counselor to the president, wouldn’t say Friday whether President Trump believes climate change is a hoax, but insisted after Trump’s decision to leave the Paris climate agreement that Trump believes in creating a cleaner environment.

“He believes in clear air, clean water, a clean environment, and he believes that we have to negotiate better deals for this country, and that there’s a balance between environmental protection and economic relief,” Conway said on ABC.

Conway was pressed repeatedly on whether Trump believes climate change is real or a hoax, after which Conway said Trump should be asked that directly.

“You should ask him that,” Conway said. “And I hope you get the opportunity to.”

Conway joins other Trump administration officials who brushed off questions Thursday about whether the president believes in global warming.

“The fact that the president in his speech today said that he wants to come back and renegotiate a better deal for the United States and for the world, I think that pretty much speaks for itself,” a senior administration official told reporters Thursday.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer, who was asked about if Trump believes human activity contributed to climate change, said he hadn’t asked the president.

In the past, Trump has referred to climate change as a “hoax.”
