EU calls for taking away US citizens’ visa-free travel privileges

The European Union took a step this week towards requiring American citizens to bring a visa when visiting EU nations after the U.S. failed to agree to visa-free travel for citizens of five EU members.

The European Parliament voted Thursday to approve a non-binding resolution that calls for temporarily imposing a visa waiver for American travelers until reciprocity is achieved.

American citizens are currently still allowed to travel to EU nations visa-free, even as the U.S. denied the same for travelers from Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia and Cyprus. Should the EU resolution be applied, alliance member nations could take a hit in tourism and trade.

The vote comes after many European leaders publicly condemned President Trump’s travel ban, now put on ice in the courts.

Other countries, including Canada, had not been meeting visa-free travel commitments either, but have now lifted or plan to lift the restrictions soon, according to the Independent.
