Cornyn threatens weekend Senate work to confirm Trump picks

A top Republican senator is ready to keep the Senate in session constantly for the next several days in order to force through President-elect Trump’s Cabinet nominees.

“I am prepared for the Senate to stay in session as long as it takes — all night, all weekend — to confirm President Trump’s cabinet nominees,” Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, tweeted.

Cornyn and other Senate Republicans are frustrated by Democrats’ promises to slow walk Trump’s Cabinet nominations. They point to President Obama’s first day in office, when he had seven Cabinet nominees confirmed, as an example.

While some Trump appointees, like retired Marine Gens. James Mattis and John Kelly, are expected to be confirmed Friday for the posts of secretary of defense and secretary of homeland security respectively, Democrats are promising to hold up others over ethics concerns.

Democrats say the paperwork on some Trump picks has not come through, and Senate Democrats want to have that information in front of them before they vote on Trump’s nominees.
