Kroger will no longer sell guns and ammunition to customers under the age of 21.
The nation’s largest grocery chain sells guns at 46 Fred Meyer stores in western states, CNN reported Thursday. Those stores will continue to sell weapons, but the age restriction will go into effect immediately.
“In response to the tragic events in Parkland and elsewhere, we’ve taken a hard look at our policies and procedures for firearm sales,” Kroger said in a statement to CNN. “Recent events demonstrate the need for additional action on the part of responsible gun retailers.”
Kroger added it no longer sells “assault-style rifles” in its stores in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho. It will no longer take special orders for similar rifles in its Alaska stores.
Retail companies have been taking action on gun control in the last few days in reaction to activism from students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florda. That school was the scene of a devastating mass shooting on Feb. 14 when a former student killed 17 people and injured 16 others.
Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart also announced new policies, with Dick’s ending sales of AR-15-style rifles all together and both companies no longer selling guns to people under the age of 21.
