Obama: Supreme Court should weigh in on birth control

The Obama administration wants the Supreme Court to take on a case related to Obamacare.

The administration acknowledged in court filings Thursday that the high court should step in to settle a battle over objections from faith-based colleges, hospitals and organizations to birth control coverage, according to the Associated Press.

The lawsuits appeared likely to head to the court, as several lower appeals courts have made conflicting rulings on the issue.

At the heart of the issue is Obamacare’s requirement that insurers cover preventive services such as birth control. Faith-based nonprofit organizations have opposed the measure since doling out birth control would violate their beliefs.

The administration gave the organizations an accommodation. Birth control would be provided to the organization’s employees but the organization would not have to pay for it.

But the groups want an exemption, which means the employees would not get any coverage at all.
