Summer meetings focus on math

HERNANDO, Miss. (AP) — The DeSoto County school system will host meetings in late June and July to explain a new Common Core math curriculum being implemented in the fall.

Michelle Corbin, the school district’s math specialist, tells The Commercial Appeal (http://bit.ly/11EsUHx ) that the new math courses will better prepare students for college.

She said the program uses a common set of standards being used in all schools nationwide that adopt the Common Core standards, currently 47 states.

“We’ve looked at why kids aren’t performing well (nationwide),” Corbin said, “and we’ve found we’re too busy looking for the answer and not the reasoning behind it.”

The new curriculum is designed to address such shortcoming in U.S. students by taking a harder look at how solutions are reached.

While the school district is only holding meetings on math in the 6-12 grade levels, the Common Core approach involves other subject areas as well, such as English and language arts.

For now, the district wants to get out the word about the math curriculum at the middle and high school levels since that’s where educators will be focusing beginning in the fall, Corbin said.

An initial meeting was held June 3 attracted about 30 people, Corbin said.

She said the meetings will share the same information and are open parents and other local residents.
