Byron & Barone: Starting from scratch in South Carolina

South Carolina could hold some surprises, with little polling data to gauge the temperament of Palmetto State voters. The last South Carolina poll was completed a week before the Iowa caucuses and more than two weeks before the New Hampshire primary. South Carolina has chosen the Republican candidate who’s gone on to be the party’s nominee from 1980 to 2008, and the “first in the South” contest is sure to be a slugfest in a solidly Republican region that’s formed much of the base for the GOP.

The leading contenders now have a chance to seriously shake up the race as the field continues to winnow. Listen as the Washington Examiner‘s Chief Political Columnist Byron York and Senior Political Analyst Michael Barone consider whether South Carolina will again chose a winner, or if it could see a repeat of 2012 when former House Speaker Newt Gingrich won the state, but never gained enough traction to secure the nomination.
