Former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke accused Texas’s Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of intentionally sacrificing the lives of Texans for political gain via his decision to completely reopen the state’s economy.
“They literally want to sacrifice the lives of our fellow Texans,” O’Rourke told MSNBC’s Nicolle Wallace in response to Abbott’s move to reopen the state and lift all coronavirus restrictions. “For, I don’t know, political gain, to satisfy certain political interests within the state.”

O’Rourke said his statement did not amount to hyperbole and called the Republican Party a “cult of death.”

“A death warrant for Texans,” O’Rourke tweeted. “Add them to the 44,000+ killed as he failed to confront the pandemic & botched the vaccine rollout. And those who froze to death because he cares more about energy companies’ profits than keeping Texans alive. Abbott is killing the people of Texas.”
