Rep. Matt Gaetz is reportedly considering not running for reelection in 2022 in order to turn his frequent news commentary into a full-time gig.
The Florida Republican is in talks with the conservative Newsmax cable network about taking a role there and has told confidants that he is interested in becoming a media personality, according to a Tuesday Axios report citing three unnamed sources “with direct knowledge of the talks.”
Gaetz’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A representative for Florida Panhandle’s 1st Congressional District since 2017, Gaetz, a staunch ally and defender of former President Donald Trump, is a regular guest on a number of conservative platforms, including Fox News and former Trump White House strategist Steve Bannon’s podcast.
Gaetz has also been active in campaigning in the post-Trump era. In January, he traveled to Wyoming to encourage a primary challenge to Rep. Liz Cheney, the No. 3 House Republican.
The 38-year-old is engaged to Ginger Luckey, sister to Oculus founder and Republican donor Palmer Luckey. He also has a 19-year-old informally adopted son named Nestor, a Cuban immigrant.

Last year, Gaetz broke with many of his Republican colleagues when he wrote an op-ed for the Washington Examiner in favor of proxy voting, arguing that remote voting deals “a devastating blow to the lobbyists and special interests who corrupt our politics and harm our nation.”
