Dump truck driver injured after bullet apparently shatters window

A dump truck driver was injured on northbound Interstate 395 Tuesday morning when what authorities think was a bullet shattered the passenger-side window and sent glass flying, piercing his arm.

The 60-year-old Alexandria driver was treated and released from Inova Fairfax Hospital, said Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Terry Licklider.

Police were unable to locate a bullet or any witnesses after a search of the area near Edsall Road in Alexandria. The way the glass shattered indicates a shot from a handgun, Licklider said.

The driver was in an empty dump truck on his way to work at about 7 a.m. when the incident occurred.

The sergeant said on-the-road violence is usually the product of road rage, when “somebody cuts someone off or gives them a hand gesture.” In this case, however, he said there is no indication of any dispute.

“Occasionally, you have a person that will point a gun,” Licklider said. “But as far as actually shooting, we haven’t had any calls for that in quite some time.”

The incident is especially eerie for the D.C. metro region, which was terrorized by a series of sniper shootings in 2002. Police say there is no evidence that this attack could be similar.
