A development that includes a new plaza for Eastern Market’s Sunday flea market would shrink the total vendors to two-thirds the size of the current outdoor market. The reduction to 68 tents from 100 has local residents seizing on an opportunity to ask for more delays for the project.
The project is set to go before the city Historic Preservation Review Board this week and the Advisory Neighborhood Commission is suggesting “the board might want to review alternate configurations that would meet the terms of the city agreement and respond to community input.”
At a community meeting last weekend, representatives from developer Stanton EastBanc said there were ways to accommodate additional tents by closing off an additional block on C Street or Seventh Street around the corner. The development will be built where the shuttered Hine Junior High School stands now. The school’s blacktop playground hosts the flea market.
