1. Coach Mike Shanahan said left tackle Trent Williams is about “70 percent” healthy. Which means there’s a chance he could play Sunday, but probably not a great one. Williams, who suffered a high ankle sprain Oct. 16 vs. Philadelphia, was limited in practice Wednesday.
Williams said it’s been hard to watch.
“That’s the main reason I’m out here pushing,” he said. “I can’t watch no more.”
He said he’s tested his ankle laterally.
“Sometimes it responds good and sometimes it still feels like it will be a process,” he said.
2. By the way, if Williams returns, don’t be surprised if the Redskins return Will Montgomery to center.
3. Tight end Fred Davis did not practice because of a mild ankle sprain. Earlier in the day he said the injury wasn’t a big deal.
4. Newly signed running back Tashard Choice (hamstring) did not practice and won’t play Sunday. Safety Oshiomogho Atogwe (toe, knee) also did not practice. Atogwe has looked slow lately, or, at least his reactions are not fast at all so the injuries could be taking a toll.
5. Corner Phillip Buchanon (neck, knee)and linebacker London Fletcher (hamstring) were limited.
6. Former Redskins corner Carlos Rogers was popular with the local media, not just because he criticized ownership two years ago. Rather, it’s hard to think of a time when he ever turned down an interview request – even after games in which he’d been beat or dropped a pick. It’s why he was voted the Good Guy award winner last season.
7. Newly-signed running back Tashard Choice said of coming to Washington, “I can’t tell you how motivated I am to be here and play… I’m here for a reason and I’m going to take advantage of it.”
8. Guard Kory Lichtentsteiger visited the locker room for the first time since his surgery last week. He faces a difficult road: Six to eight months of rehab, which puts him on pace for being ready just before training camp next season. Doctors repaired his ACL, MCL and medial and lateral meniscus in his right knee.
9. The tough part for Lichtensteiger? He was in a contract year and he was playing well enough to get a solid deal from Washington. Maybe he still will, but it’s a brutal turn of events for him and it’s why players need to get big deals whenever possible.
“That’s the toughest part,” Lichtensteiger said. “I felt like this was my year to do big things. It’s not great timing.”
But his goal is obviously to win his left guard spot back next year. The coaches like him and it should be clear to everyone that he helped. He’s a good fit in this system.
10. It would have been interesting to see Lichtensteiger develop this season. He had a stronger comfort level this season, even dealing with the media and it was a pleasant occurence. ‘Steiger made a concerted effort with us in interviews after a season in which he was heavily criticized. That says something.
11. As for the injury: Lichtensteiger said he can’t call it a dirty play. The Eagles’ Darryl Tapp engaged him after Rex Grossman threw an interception. There’s no video of the play.
“I saw him kind of wheeling back to block me on the interception,” Lichtensteiger said. “And I knew he was going to try to hit me, so I’m like, ‘All right, I’m going to go hit him first.’ And as soon as I hit him, I planted awkwardly on it.”
12. Lichtensteiger’s best quote perhaps on his situation? Maybe this one: “I come in and do my rehab and go back to sit in my recliner. My wife is getting sick of me. She has to take care of me. We have a 3-month old, too, so it’s liek she’s got two babies to take care of right now. If you’re going to feel bad for anybody right now, feel bad for her.”
13. There was a difference in John Beck’s media session Wednesday compared to this time last week. He wanted to move forward last week, coming off a decent outing vs. Carolina. This time, he rehashed his issues from the past week. Clearly this game stayed with him longer than the Panthers’ loss. He knows that a good portion of the 10 sacks (the NFL adjusted the total Wednesday) fall on him.
“There were a few in there where I could have easily said, ‘You know what, we don’t have a play right here, just get the ball out of my hands, live to play the next down,” Beck said.
