Former Washington Redskin LaVar Arrington was seriously injured driving his motorcycle Monday on the Capital Beltway despite not having a motorcycle license, officials said.
According to Maryland State Police, Arrington ? a 28-year-old Annapolis resident ? was taken to Prince George?s Hospital Center. Capt. Chauncey Bowers, spokesman for the Prince George?s County Fire/EMS Department, said Arrington was in serious condition at the scene.
The former Pro Bowl linebacker had a valid driver?s license, but did not have the endorsement required by the state to drive a motorcycle, police said. He could face a $330 fine and three points on his driving record.
Police said Arrington drove his 2007 Kawasaki ZX-14 on the exit ramp leading from westbound Route 50 to Interstate 495 when he drove onto the ramp?s shoulder and slid on some gravel. He lost control of the motorcycle and ran into a guard rail. Police said Arrington was wearing his helmet.
Police do not know how fast Arrington was going, but have ruled out alcohol as a possible cause of the crash.
In addition to being cited for driving without a proper license, Arrington was also charged with a lesser offense of failure to control speed to avoid a collision.
Arrington was drafted as the second pick overall by the Redskins in 2000 and played six seasons in Washington before buying out his control and signing with the New York Giants. The Giants cut Arrington earlier this year after playing only six games before suffering a season-ending Achilles injury against the Dallas Cowboys. He currently an unsigned free agent.
