PGA feels more like the John Deere than a major
Why does the PGA Championship often have the feel of the John Deere Classic? Last year’s tournament at wild and wooly Whistling Straits was an exception – a dramatic course with a unique television signature and an exciting finish with four appealing young contenders (Rory McIlroy, Bubba Watson, Dustin Johnson, and winner Martin Kaymer).
But this year’s event, completely lackluster through two rounds at non-descript Atlanta Athletic Club, is looking more like just another PGA. No wonder it’s the undisputed “fourth” major.
Part of the problem this time is the leaderboard. Late in the second round, it included one player out of the top 13 with a major on his resume (Jim Furyk) and no highly-ranked Euros.
Let’s hope for a strong showing on moving day by players such as Lee Westwood (1-under), Sergio Garcia (1-over) or Phil Mickelson (1-over) to save this dog of a PGA that might be destined for a win by the likes of a Jason Duffner, John Senden, or D.A. Points.
