Fix the Court is suing the Justice Department for access to records from Supreme Court nominee Neil Gorsuch’s tenure as a deputy assistant attorney general.
Fix the Court is an organization that advocates for greater transparency at the Supreme Court, and has called for term limits for the justices. On Friday, the organization filed a lawsuit in federal court after the Justice Department decided to delay its response to the group’s Freedom of Information Act request for details of Gorsuch’s work in 2005-2006.
“Little is known about Judge Gorsuch’s tenure at the Justice Department, but he served during a tumultuous stretch, at a time when agency attorneys were believed to be giving legal advice in support of warrantless wiretapping on American citizens and in the run-up to the infamous dismissal of U.S. attorneys for partisan reasons,” said Gabe Roth, Fix the Court’s executive director, in a statement.
While Fix the Court has taken no position on Gorsuch’s Supreme Court bid, a press release announcing its decision to sue the Justice Department cites a letter from liberal groups to congressional leaders opposing Gorsuch’s confirmation as heightening its interest in Gorsuch’s records.
