WASHINGTON (AP) — A D.C. councilmember says city agencies aren’t spending enough money on small, local businesses as required by law.
Councilmember Vincent Orange will hold a hearing on Friday to press city officials on why agencies haven’t met their goals for giving contracts to local businesses. The council passed a resolution this week calling on agencies to meet their spending goals. Orange believes the local business community is being shortchanged by $1 billion over the past three years and that meeting the goals would create jobs for District of Columbia residents.
Mayor Vincent Gray has accused Orange of “alarmist rhetoric” and a misunderstanding of the program. He said in a letter to the Council this week that administration officials would “correct these misperceptions and inaccuracies” at the hearing.
