Liberty lost in the state semifinals to North East, but in his senior year Mathias was 7-2 on the mound. Mathias was a four-year varsity starter for Liberty, but did not pitch until his junior season.
Mathias will head to Potomac State College (in West Virginia) in August, and plans to play baseball for the Catamounts. Potomac State assistant coach Don Schafer recruited Mathias while at Liberty.
“I think he is going to be a good fit for us,” Schafer said. “I know he can hit. It is just a matter of where he is going to play defensively.”
Schafer indicated that Mathias would probably find himself playing either first base or third base. “We want to increase his foot speed,” Schafer said. “He is the type of kid you want on your team; he works hard.”
