Raven’s Night at the Birchmere Saturday
It’s Grimm, re-imagined.
And so much more.
On Saturday, the Birchmere in Alexandria hosts Raven’s Night, an evening of music and dance with a twist of the macabre.
“Raven’s Night is a concept for a show that’s more of an event than a show,” said show organizer and dancer Belladonna.
Belladonna, who produces, teaches and dances locally, had previously done a show at the Birchmere, and was invited back. She’s excited to utilize the space better known for hosting famous musicians.
“We want it to be an evening destination,” Belladonna said. “We’re trying to maximize the venue. We wanted to bring a lot of diversity to the night.”
Raven’s Night will feature three different entertainment options. The All Hallows Eve Exposition kicks things off in the lobby, followed by live music in the ballroom, and then the main “Cabaret Melancholia.”
Cabaret Melancholia will feature fusion belly dance, which combines traditional belly dance with world dance such as flamenco.
“It’s this living art that’s evolving,” Belladonna said.
Belladonna, who encourages attendees to dress in costume, said that doing a theme show presents an interesting creative challenge. Featuring a number of dancers from the area, Raven’s Night will add its own special twist on Grimm’s fairy tales.
“It’s telling it from another perspective,” Belladonna said.
